Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to think accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating, Arrogant, Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is.

My Thoughts:

I am currently participating in the Lux Readathon hosted by Val @ Stuck in Books, Jessica @ Just a Book Lover and Kayleigh @ K-Books. I am re-reading all the books in the Lux Series Shadows, Obsidian, Onyx and Opal. The first time I read Obsidian I didn’t have my blog so I thought I would post a review! It’s funny because Obsidian was part of the reason I started my Book Blog in the first place. I wanted to do something that would help me practice writing and Katy had such enthusiasm for her blog it seemed like it would be fun. Jennifer has quickly become on of my favorite authors and I am addicted to all her series.

The Story:

Katy Swartz is forced to move to small town Virginia from Florida by her Mother, who is trying to forget the tragic death of Katy’s Father 3 years earlier. Katy doesn’t expect to find anything interesting in Virginia but is in for a surprise when she meets Daemon Black the boy next door and his sister Dee. Dee is bubbly and sweet and quickly becomes Katy’s best friend. Daemon on the other hand is a completely different story. He is rude, arrogant and undeniably hot, he also seem to hate Katy with a passion and she doesn’t understand why.

“Beautiful face. Beautiful body. Horrible attitude. It was the holy trinity of hot boys.”

Even though he drives Katy crazy she cannot deny the chemistry between them and seems inexplicably drawn to him. Dee and Daemon have secrets though and Katy is about to be swept into a world she never imagined and one she may not survive. It turns out that Daemon and Dee are a race of aliens secretly living on earth called the Luxen. The Department of Defence moniters and controls everything in their lives. Along with the Luxen another race of aliens came to earth know as the Arum. The Arum are the natural enemies of the Luxen and when Daemon uses his powers around Katy it leaves a trace on her that will draw the Arum right to her.

Katy has no choice but to stick close to Daemon so he can protect her and his sister from the Arum. Spending time with Daemon though is showing her that isn’t exactly what he seems and he has a good reason for not wanting her to get close to him or his family. Katy being in Daemon’s life could out them all in danger and Daemon has already lost one person he loves.

Main Characters:

Katy is currently one of my favorite female main characters!  I love the fact that she is book geek and has a book blog that she obsesses over as much as I do about mine. I always enjoy reading about characters that love books as much as I do! She is also a strong person that doesn’t take crap from anyone especially Daemon. She gives back as much Daemon dishes out and doesn’t let anyone tell her what to do. She isn’t always the damsel in distress either. She is determined to be strong and help the people she loves and manages to save them even though she is human and doesn’t have any special powers. I think she is a brave person with a big heart who would never turn her back on someone in need to save herself.

“Why are you such an ass?” The words came out before I could think twice.
“Everyone has to excel at something, right?”
“Well, you’re doing a great job.”

I love Daemon Black as well and not just because he is extremely drool-worthy. He has the whole bad boy with a surly attitude thing going for him but my favorite moments are when he is more vulnerable and shows Katy his soft side. You realize that Daemon pushes people away the way he does because he is scared to lose anymore people he loves and falling for Katy could destroy them all. He is only 17 but he has has so much responsibility put on him and he is responsible for keeping so many people safe. I feel bad for him that he can’t have a life like a normal teenager.

He shifted slightly, lifting his head to the sky. In a second, the mask he wore slipped down. And there was the real Daemon. Still a total badass, but there was pain in him, a vulnerability in the lines of his face that I doubted anyone ever got to see.

Quotes:

“I’ve always found that the most beautiful people, truly beautiful inside and out, are the ones who are quietly unaware of their effect.” His eyes searched mine intently, and for a moment we stood there toe to toe. “The ones who throw their beauty around, waste what they have? Their beauty is only passing. It’s just a shell hiding nothing but shadows and emptiness.”

“Daemon: I checked out your blog.
Katy: Stalking me again, I see. Do I need to get a restraining order?
Daemon: In your dreams, Kitten. Oh wait, I’m already starring in those, aren’t I?
Katy: Nightmares, Daemon. Nightmares.”

“Remind me,” he paused, drawing in a stuttered gasp, “to never piss you off again. Christ, are you secretly a ninja?”

“You haven’t locked yourself in any rooms or rocked in any corners, right?”
I rolled my eyes and began walking again. “No Daemon, but thanks for making sure I’m mentally sound and all.”

My Rating:

I absolutely love this book and give it 5 Stars! It has a very special place on my bookshelf and if you haven’t read it you really should!
