Life after Life

Now Maggie has been given the chance of her after-life to become a Guard, nothing will stand in her way. Not even the undeniable attraction she feels for her trainer and past love—Jackson. But when the battle between Shadowed and Guard begins again which side will she choose?

When her boss, Felix, partners Jackson and Maggie up with Ally and Cooper to investigate terrifying Shadowed activity, she doesn’t think it could get any worse. Jackson and Cooper barely tolerate each other and this time, Maggie isn’t just proving her loyalty to the Guard during one mission...she has a side mission too. One so secret and so dangerous she can’t tell a soul...

My Thoughts

I am very excited to be a part of the pre-release blog tour for Soul Possessed by Katlyn Duncan.  I was given an eARC of Soul Possessed from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. Check out Katlyn Duncan’s website for more tour stops and enter her giveaway!

I was very excited to read Soul Possessed after finishing the first book Soul Taken which left me with a lot of unanswered questions that I was dying to know the answers too. Maggie is finally promoted from soul Collector and is getting her chance to be a part of the Guard, but  she still has to prove that she can do the job. Turns out Jackson her extremely hot lover from her unremembered past was actually a spy for her boss Felix and not really a part of the Shadowed. Felix decides that Jackson should be Maggie’s trainer since apparently he is the only one who wants to be around her after her little “soul sucking” incident with Ally’s Father David. Which I would like to put on record that I think he totally deserved! Anyone who is willing to destroy their own daughters soul is evil period. Luckily for us their pairing up leads to some very intense and steamy scenes between Maggie and Jackson. It’s also so sad that he has been pining away for her for over a 100 years and she doesn’t even remember what they had or who either of them really are. Jackson is very determined to win Maggie over but never pushes her to remember anything about him since she is terrified her memories will bring out her powers and she may get hurt him. The whole time I was screaming internally to kiss him and get some more memories already! Alas characters never like to listen to me.

In Soul Possessed Maggie seems a bit more subdued than what she was in Soul Taken. I really enjoyed her character in the first book and loved how stubborn and in your face she was. She didn’t let people talk down to her and stood her ground. I really like characters that are strong and don’t need someone else to constantly save them. When it came down to it she fought for what is right. Since discovering that she was responsible for the deaths of her husband and daughter as well as Ally’s father David she sees herself as a monster that doesn’t deserve happiness. It breaks my heart to see her like this because even thought she made some pretty serious mistakes they weren’t necessarily all her fault and she has done a lot of good to make up for it.  Ally also underwent a huge change after her almost dying and is a much more likeable character in the 2nd book. She still seems like a bit of a princess but acknowledges that she was cruel to people and treated the ones who loved her most like crap. I never felt much sympathy for Ally in Soul Taken but after Soul Possessed I found myself rooting for her to have a happy ending. One of the hardest things about reading this book for me was trying to decide which boy I was rooting for. You really don’t learn much about Jackson until the end and when you hear the things he has done to find Maggie it melts your heart. On the other hand though you have sweet Cooper who seems more trustworthy than Jackson. It doesn’t help that they both are extremely drool worthy! I don’t know what is about boys with swords, but oh boy, it makes them that much hotter! By the end I still hadn’t made up my mind whose team I am on!

When tasked with an assignment that will determine whether she gets to continue as a guard Maggie steps up to the plate to find out the truth. Unfortunately Felix in his infinite wisdom once again puts her in a awkward situation by pairing her up with Cooper, Ally and Jackson. Cooper still doesn’t trust Jackson, Ally isn’t ready yet to let go of her human life and Jackson basically wants to punch Cooper in the face anytime he gets within two feet of Ally. With two men fighting over her and trying to keep Ally’s mind on the task at hand Maggie has her hands full. Then Jackson pulls out another surprise that totally changes the tables up for Maggie returns to to her someone from her past. Convinced she thinks she knows who she can trust Maggie’s jumps blindly into battle but as the Shadowed’s nefarious plans start coming to light she is in for a shock that may cost her someone she holds dear.

Soul Possessed is a quick and fun read that will suck you in with all the twists and leave you wanting more! I cannot wait for the next book and to continue Maggie’s journey into her past and future! I give Soul Possessed 4 shiny gold stars!
